WHY WE LOVE IT: This is a must-try coffee from an underrepresented growing region. A thick, lush body is mixed with effervescent fruitiness and a complex minerality in one very delicious coffee.

It's been far too long since we were able to bring you a coffee from Myanmar, but we're back with a real banger. This coffee from Kyauk Ku Pyin is best characterized as "purple" and "red"; think big cherry and purple grape notes, with a thick mouthfeel that carries with it a sparkling minerality.

The Kyauk Ku Pyin community is made up of over 400 Danu families in the Shan State region of Myanmar. Here, the families grow 100% Catuai, a variety that's renowned for its cup quality. The community specializes in making very clean-tasting naturals, largely free of some of the funk and fermented notes that can be present in coffees that undergo this process.

This community is making coffee that shows the stunning potential of coffee from the region. Fans of coffee from the Asia-Pacific will find much to love with it's slight earthiness — think oak or even tobacco. But the rich depth of its fruits and "clean" taste is a testament to the work the community puts in with proper picking, processing, and quality control. 

Our relationships in Myanmar are among the most exciting that we've established. Almost 15 years ago, before Myanmar broke onto the speciality coffee scene, we began working with several political refugees from the country. Through their presence on our team, we became fascinated with Myanmar and its history, and we were ecstatic to see the country emerge as a specialty origin. When we were invited to join the Coffee Quality Institute and USAID one of the first-ever coffee buying trips to the area in 2016, we couldn't pass it up. Today, we're proud to be back with another coffee from Myanmar, one that we hope shows its potential and progress in the world of specialty coffee.
