It has been far too long since we've featured the work of Oscar Medina, a producer from our long-time partners at the Monserrate community. This well-balanced coffee is sweet and fruity, with a gentle, creamy body that reminded us of macadamia nuts and nectarines. One of the most rewarding parts of working closely with producers like Oscar is seeing what’s possible when trust, consistency, and communication flourish. This delicious release is a testament to both the exceptional quality coming out of Monserrate and the strength of collaborative relationships built over time.

Oscar Medina and his mother, Omaira Quintero, are the owners of Finca Los Altares, a small farm located near a river in the Monserrate region. Raised in a coffee-farming family, Oscar joined the Proagromil group to improve the quality of his harvests. Since then, he has made steady improvements to the farm, building a dedicated drying station, a coffee processing area, and even a composting system to manage byproducts sustainably.
Today, Los Altares includes 2.5 productive hectares of coffee, yielding roughly 4,750 kilograms of dried parchment coffee each year. The family also cultivates plantains alongside their coffee trees, practicing small-scale intercropping. Oscar’s dedication to quality has earned him recognition, including first place in the annual “Lo Mejor de Monserrate” competition.
MORE ABOUT MONSERRATE
Coffee from Colombia Monserrate is one of those things we could wax poetic about for hours and hours. Our oldest relationship coffee, team members from Kaldi's Coffee have bonded, drank coffee, and played soccer with the great people of the Monserrate community across several origin trips spanning back to 2009. The small community's dedication to quality over the years has been inspiring to watch.
The Colombia Monserrate community lot (blended coffee from producers throughout Monserrate) plays a pivotal role in many of our blends throughout the year. Its reliable quality and sweetness are a major driver in the same qualities you are used to getting from Cafe Kaldi and 700.

We offer three different grind sizes on the vast majority of our coffee offerings: drip, espresso, and French press.
- Use drip grind if you plan on making your coffee using a coffee machine, in a pour over brewer, or if you want to try a newer way to make your trusty French press.
- Use espresso grind if you have an espresso machine at home. This grind will be very fine and will over-extract (in other words, taste bitter and chalky) in other methods.
- Use French press grind if you are making a coffee in the more traditional French Press method, or making cold brew, or do very large batches in a Chemex (greater than 60 grams of coffee).

Please visit our brewing page here. Coffee brewing is as much an art as it is a science, and it might take a few tries for you to find a sweet-spot that matches your taste preference. We recommend not getting too lost in the "right" way to brew, but instead focus on what you like and try to educate yourself on some best practices. And then just take it from there!
That said, we offer several how-to's for many popular brewers:
