As a coffee origin, Peru is inspiring for the way in which it has pushed its way into the limelight over the past decade. Historically overshadowed by neighboring Colombia and Brazil, Peruvian farmers were not to be outdone. Through the work of smart, farmer-focused co-ops and organizational partnerships, Peru has shown the coffee world what should have been obvious already: its temperate microclimate, high altitudes, and small farms are perfect for producing excellent coffee. When supported well, these producers on remote, high-altitude farms can create some dazzling coffees.
Nicolas Chilcon carries forward this march towards higher awareness. This release is a true microlot, with Nicolas growing on his two small farms El Encanot (1 hectare) and La Conquista (1/2 hectare). Here, Nicolas grows coffee to sustain and grow his family, with the ultimate goal of educating his children.
Mostly made up of the hardy Catimor variety but rounded by inclusions of Caturra, Bourbon, and Typica, we can taste the quality and rich terroir of Peru. In the cup, we get sweetly crisp pear that mixes with the jammy fruits and subtle-pastry taste of a fig bar. These notes accompany a wonderful background of vanilla. It's sweet, rounded, and delicious, and yet another example of this excellent growing region and the people that make it possible.
