This is the fourth year we’ve offered this coffee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is not the first country that coffee buyers think of when it comes to speciality coffee. The DRC is located just to the west of Rwanda and Burundi, on the banks of Lake Tanganyika.
The coffee comes from the Muungano cooperative, located very close to Lake Kivu in the Kivu region. This cooperative was first formed in 2009 and is comprised of 4,400 smallholder farmers, nearly half of them women. Gender justice and integrating farmers from different ethnic groups is a focus of the coop. The word “Muungano” in Swahili actually translates to “togetherness.” Since starting in 2009, they have installed two new washing stations, a new cupping lab, and have a trained roaster and cupper on staff. The fruits from their hard work are evident in the quality of the coffee they continue to produce every year. This year is certainly no exception. Enjoy.
