Kaldi’s relationships in the Monserrate community are among our longest-standing. Over the course of our partnership with the community, exporter Racafe, and our importer, Atlas, we have seen coffee transform the area. No longer do day-laborers need to depend on the drug trade to get by, when they can make twice as much picking coffee. It’s the kind of change we love to see and continue supporting, and it’s built on quality coffee and strong relationships.
One of those ongoing relationships is with Omaira Quintero and her son, Oscar Medina. They were among some of the producers consistently placing high at the annual competition from early on, and we have been impressed with their work for eight years running. Omaira has been caring for the 3.5-hectare farm with its 1,500 coffee trees for the past few years. She plants only Castillo variety, a more recently-developed Colombian cultivar that shows great promise in both cup quality and disease resistance. Once again, we think the quality of Omaria’s work shines in this year’s lot.
