This beginning of October marked the beginning of the United States Barista and Brewer’s competition season. A few of our team members were able to participate in the preliminary round of the 2018 Coffee Championships in Louisville, Kentucky.
The event featured nine Brewers cup competitors and twenty Baristas going head to head for an opportunity to secure their spots at the Qualifying Competition later this year. Once on site, each of the competitors was given a choice between two coffees to practice with. Practice times lasted thirty minutes and then each competitor had seven minutes to present their routine and coffee for a panel of judges.
Our regional training manager, Andrew McCaslin, and general manager of our Gerhart cafe, Jorden Hilton, participated in the Barista competition. In the Barista competition, all competitors must serve judges two cappuccinos and two espressos. Andrew came in 2nd place and Jorden competed valiantly and just missed out on the top 8.
Matt Foster of our wholesale team, and Columbia Lead Barista, Sam Miers, participated in the Brewer’s Cup and served 2 manually brewed coffees. After the two days of competition, Sam secured 1st place in the Brewer’s Cup and Matt brought home 3rd!
Kaldi’s competitors must now get ready for the next round of competition, tentatively scheduled to happen in December/January, which determines who moves on to the National Competition. Good luck to all of our hard working baristas!
