This is the third time we’ve offered this coffee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We were very impressed with the coffee in year’s past and are excited to report that this year’s cup is as good as ever.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is not the first country that coffee buyers think of when it comes to speciality coffee. The DRC is located just to the west of Rwanda and Burundi, on the banks of Lake Tanganyika. There they are blessed with many of the variables such as altitude, soil, and old varieties like bourbon, to grow world class coffee.
The coffee comes from the Muungano cooperative, located very close to the lake in the Kivu region. This cooperative was first formed in 2009 and comprised of 4100 smallholder farmers. They first started with a rented wet mill but as quality and production has increased, they were able to build a new wet mill. At the wet mill they do a 12 hour fermentation with another 8 hour soak after the first fermentation. The coffee is then dried on raised beds.
